GTA 6 Is Changing Its Classic Sprint Control After 25 Years

Grand Theft Auto 6 is reportedly making a major change to one of Rockstar Games’ most familiar controls. For years, GTA players have had to repeatedly tap the X button on PlayStation, or A on Xbox, to make their character sprint. In GTA 6, that old system may finally be gone.

According to creator MikeShowSha, who says he attended a GTA 6 preview at Rockstar North, sprinting now uses an analogue-stick click instead of constant face-button tapping. Several reports describe the new GTA 6 sprint control as L3 on PlayStation and clicking the left stick on Xbox controllers.

It may sound like a small change, but GTA players have used the old tap-to-sprint method for decades. Rockstar changing it could make running, chasing enemies, escaping police, and exploring Vice City feel much smoother.

GTA 6 May Replace Tap X Sprinting With L3

In older Grand Theft Auto games, sprinting worked differently from many other action games.

On PlayStation controllers, players normally had to press the X button again and again to run faster. Xbox players used the A button in the same way. This system appeared in several Rockstar games and became a familiar part of playing GTA.

However, GTA 6 appears to be changing that setup.

MikeShowSha shared new details after attending a GTA 6 preview. He explained that players will no longer need to keep tapping X to sprint. Instead, sprinting is said to use an analogue-stick click.

For PlayStation players, that means pressing the left stick down, commonly called L3. On Xbox controllers, the same input is usually called LS, meaning Left Stick.

Sprint on XboxRepeatedly tap APress LS / left stick

Long-distance runningRequires repeated button pressesMay need only a single stick click

This would bring GTA 6 closer to the control style used by many modern open-world games, shooters, and action-adventure titles.

Why Rockstar’s Old Sprint System Was Different

The tap-to-sprint system has been part of Grand Theft Auto for a very long time. Older GTA games often made players press a face button repeatedly when they wanted to run at full speed.

For longtime fans, tapping X or A became part of GTA muscle memory. During police chases, missions, races to a getaway car, or fights in the street, players would quickly tap the sprint button over and over.

Some players enjoyed the extra feeling of effort. It made running feel more active because players had to keep pressing a button instead of simply holding it down.

But many players also disliked it.

Repeated button tapping can become uncomfortable during long sessions. It can also make it harder to move the camera at the same time, because your right thumb is busy pressing X or A instead of controlling the right stick.

That is why the GTA 6 sprint control change could be an important quality-of-life improvement.

How the New GTA 6 Sprint Control Could Feel

If the reported L3 sprint control stays in the final game, players may be able to run more naturally through GTA 6’s world.

The left stick is already used to move Jason or Lucia. Clicking that same stick to sprint means players can keep their right thumb on the camera controls. This could make a big difference in fast situations.

For example, imagine running away from the police through a busy Vice City street. In previous GTA games, players would tap X while also trying to move the camera around traffic, police cars, and nearby streets.

With L3 sprinting, players could click the left stick and focus more easily on where they are going.

This may be especially useful during:

  • Police chases on foot
  • Shootouts and escape missions
  • Stealth sections
  • Busy city exploration
  • Missions with timed objectives
  • Running toward vehicles or safe locations
  • Multiplayer-style activities, if GTA Online returns in a new form

The change could also help players react faster in combat. Your right thumb can stay on the camera stick, helping you look around while running instead of switching between the camera and sprint button.

GTA 6 Movement Is Said To Feel More Fluid

MikeShowSha also said GTA 6’s movement felt more fluid than Rockstar’s previous games. He compared the experience with Red Dead Redemption 2, a game known for detailed but sometimes heavy character movement.

Red Dead Redemption 2 was praised for realistic animation, but some players felt Arthur Morgan’s movement could be slow or weighty. GTA 6 may still have realistic character animations, but Rockstar seems to be aiming for faster and smoother movement.

This would make sense for a game set in Vice City and the wider state of Leonida. GTA 6 is expected to have busy streets, crowded beaches, highways, swamps, stores, clubs, and many places to explore. Fast and responsive movement will matter when players are moving through the world on foot.

A smoother running system could make Jason and Lucia feel easier to control in both missions and free roam.

Is GTA 6 Sprinting Officially Confirmed?

The reported GTA 6 L3 sprint control comes from a preview attendee and gaming outlets that covered the information. Rockstar Games has not yet released a complete official controller layout showing every GTA 6 button input.

Because of that, it is best to treat the sprint change as preview information, not a final official control guide.

There is also one small point of confusion. MikeShowSha’s comments have been translated and discussed by different outlets, with most reports saying GTA 6 uses L3, or the left-stick click, for sprinting. Some reposts of his original wording have caused confusion between L3 and R3.

The clearest version of the information is this:

GTA 6 is reportedly removing the old repeated X/A sprint system and replacing it with an analogue-stick click, with most reports identifying the left stick as the new sprint input.

Until Rockstar publishes the full GTA 6 controls menu, players should avoid assuming every button layout detail is final.

Can You Still Use X To Sprint in GTA 6?

Right now, Rockstar has not confirmed whether GTA 6 will let players switch back to the classic tap-X sprint system.

Many modern games include control remapping and accessibility options. Because GTA 6 is a major modern release, players may hope to customize controls. However, there is no official confirmation that the old Rockstar running layout will be available.

Possible options Rockstar could include are:

  • A classic GTA control preset
  • Full button remapping
  • Toggle sprint
  • Hold-to-sprint
  • Stick-click sprint
  • Accessibility settings for players who dislike pressing L3

Still, these are only possibilities. Players should wait for Rockstar Games to reveal the official control settings before expecting any specific option.

Why Some GTA Fans May Miss Tap-to-Sprint

Not every GTA player will like the new control system.

For many fans, repeatedly pressing X or A is part of the classic GTA experience. It has been used for so long that some players may instinctively press X every time they want to run in GTA 6.

The change may take time to learn, especially for players who have spent hundreds of hours in GTA 5, GTA Online, Red Dead Redemption 2, and older Grand Theft Auto games.

However, most players may adjust quickly. Stick-click sprinting is common in many games, and it could feel more comfortable after a few hours of play.

There is also a practical benefit: players may no longer need to mash one face button during every long run. That could be good news for controllers that have already survived years of GTA Online missions and fast escapes.

GTA 6 Release Date and Platforms

Grand Theft Auto 6 is currently scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026.

Rockstar Games has confirmed GTA 6 for:

  • PlayStation 5
  • Xbox Series X
  • Xbox Series S

The game will take players back to Vice City, now part of the larger fictional state of Leonida. GTA 6 follows two main characters, Jason and Lucia, as they become involved in a dangerous criminal story.

Rockstar has shown that GTA 6 will feature a large open world, busy locations, modern technology, vehicles, police activity, shops, social media-style content, and many activities across Leonida.

A PC release has not been officially confirmed as of now.

GTA 6 Sprint Control Change Could Be a Big Upgrade

The GTA 6 sprint control change may be one of the smallest details revealed so far, but it could improve the way the game feels every time players move on foot.

Replacing tap-X sprinting with L3 would end a Rockstar control habit that has lasted for around 25 years. It could make movement more comfortable, give players better camera control, and reduce the need for constant button-mashing during long missions and police escapes.

Longtime GTA fans may need time to get used to the new system. But if the reported change remains in the final version, GTA 6 could offer smoother movement than previous Rockstar games while still keeping the fast, chaotic action the series is known for.

Rockstar has not yet shared the complete GTA 6 controller layout, so players should wait for official details before treating every control setting as final. Still, the reported switch from X to L3 is already one of the most interesting quality-of-life changes coming to GTA 6.
