PlayStation has reportedly stepped away from Hideo Kojima’s upcoming spy action game, PHYSINT, after concerns about the project’s budget, release plans, and possible profits. Soon after, Xbox confirmed that it is now working with Kojima Productions to publish the game.
The news is a major surprise for PlayStation fans because PHYSINT was first announced as a PlayStation project. However, reports say Sony decided not to continue funding and publishing the game. While PlayStation confirmed that it ended its collaboration with Kojima Productions, the detailed reasons come from a separate report and have not been fully confirmed by Sony or Kojima Productions.
PlayStation Has Stepped Away From PHYSINT
PlayStation officially said it made the “difficult decision” to stop collaborating with Kojima Productions on PHYSINT. The company also said it still respects Hideo Kojima and wants to continue its long relationship with him and his studio.
Kojima Productions gave more details about the timeline. According to Kojima’s statement, PlayStation informed the studio in mid-June 2026 that it planned to cancel its involvement in PHYSINT. Kojima Productions then spent around three months looking for another partner that could help keep the game alive.
That new partner is Xbox. Xbox has confirmed that it will publish PHYSINT, expanding its work with Kojima Productions. Xbox is already involved with Kojima Productions on the upcoming horror game OD, so this gives Microsoft a much bigger relationship with one of gaming’s best-known creators.
Why Did PlayStation Reportedly Leave PHYSINT?
A Bloomberg report says PlayStation had three main concerns: exclusivity, sales expectations, and the game’s growing budget.
It is important to be careful with these claims. Sony has confirmed it left the project, but it has not publicly confirmed every reason mentioned in the report. Still, the information gives fans a better idea of why the partnership may have ended.
1. Sony Reportedly Wanted Stronger Exclusivity
One major issue was reportedly PHYSINT’s platform exclusivity.
PlayStation may not have wanted to spend a very large amount of money on a game that would not stay permanently exclusive to PlayStation consoles. Big exclusive games can help console makers sell more systems, bring players into their online services, and make their platform feel more valuable.
Kojima Productions is an independent studio, which means it has more freedom than a studio owned by Sony, Microsoft, or Nintendo. That can make business deals more complicated, especially when a game may later release on other platforms.
The Death Stranding games were closely connected to PlayStation, but they were not locked to PlayStation forever. The first game later came to PC and other platforms. If PHYSINT was also expected to have limited exclusivity instead of permanent PlayStation exclusivity, Sony may have felt the investment was too risky.
This does not mean PHYSINT will definitely launch on every platform. Xbox and Kojima Productions have not announced its full platform list, release date, or exclusivity terms yet.

2. Death Stranding Games Reportedly Missed Sony’s Revenue Targets
The second reported reason is the performance of the Death Stranding series.
Bloomberg’s sources claim that Death Stranding and its sequel did not meet PlayStation’s internal revenue expectations. This point needs context: missing a company’s internal target does not automatically mean a game was a failure.
A game can sell millions of copies, earn positive reviews, win awards, and still make less money than a publisher expected. Large AAA games can cost huge amounts to develop and market. If a publisher expects a certain return and the game earns less than planned, it may become more careful about funding another expensive project.
The Death Stranding series has a passionate fanbase and is one of Kojima Productions’ biggest franchises. But PHYSINT is likely a costly new game with a different style, larger goals, and no release date in sight. Sony may have looked at the possible cost and decided it did not want to take on another major financial risk.
There are no official public sales figures that prove whether Death Stranding 2: On the Beach met or missed Sony’s targets. That part of the story remains a report based on anonymous sources, not a direct statement from PlayStation.
PHYSINT Was Also Reportedly Going Over Budget
The third reported concern was PHYSINT’s development budget.
According to reports, the game missed some internal deadlines and was expected to cost more than planned. Missed deadlines are common in game development, especially for large games with advanced graphics, voice acting, motion capture, cinematic scenes, and open-ended gameplay systems.
However, delays can become a serious issue when a project is already expensive. Every extra month of development can add more costs for staff, technology, testing, outsourcing, marketing plans, and other work.
PHYSINT is being described as a next-generation action-espionage game. Hideo Kojima is famous for making cinematic games with ambitious ideas, detailed worlds, and unusual storytelling. That creative style is exciting for fans, but it can also make projects longer and more expensive to build.
Reports say PHYSINT was still years away from launch when Sony chose to leave the project. If the game was already missing milestones and heading over budget at an early stage, PlayStation may have decided that continuing the deal was not worth the risk.
Xbox Is Now Publishing PHYSINT
Xbox officially announced its new partnership with Kojima Productions in September 2026. The company said it is honored to work with Kojima on PHYSINT and wants to help create a new kind of action-espionage experience.
Kojima also confirmed that PHYSINT is still in development. This is important because some early headlines made it sound like the game had been fully cancelled. That is not correct.
PlayStation’s version of the story is that it stepped away from collaborating on the project. Kojima’s version is that PlayStation notified his studio that it would cancel the project under its deal. Either way, the key point is that the game itself survived because Kojima Productions found a new publishing partner in Xbox.
PHYSINT is now one of two major Kojima Productions games linked with Xbox:
- OD, the horror project previously announced with Xbox Game Studios.
- PHYSINT, the new action-espionage game that was originally connected to PlayStation.
This is a major shift for Kojima Productions. For years, PlayStation and Kojima have been closely connected through games such as Metal Gear Solid, Death Stranding, and the original announcement of PHYSINT. Now, Xbox has become the publisher behind two of the studio’s biggest upcoming games.
Is PHYSINT Still Coming to PlayStation?
Right now, nobody knows.
Xbox has confirmed it will publish PHYSINT, but it has not announced the game’s release platforms. It is too early to say whether PHYSINT will release only on Xbox and PC, arrive on PlayStation later, or launch across multiple platforms.
Fans should also avoid calling the game a “PS6 exclusive” or “Xbox exclusive” unless official announcements confirm that information. PHYSINT was originally revealed as a PlayStation project, but Sony’s decision to leave the partnership has changed the situation.
The safest description is that Xbox is now publishing PHYSINT after PlayStation ended its collaboration with Kojima Productions.
What This Means for Hideo Kojima Fans
For fans, the good news is simple: PHYSINT is not dead.
Kojima Productions is still making the game, and Hideo Kojima has called it a major action-espionage project. The change from PlayStation to Xbox could affect the game’s platforms, marketing, launch plans, and future exclusivity deal, but those details are still unknown.
The situation also shows how careful major publishers have become with expensive AAA games. A famous creator, a popular franchise, and a big console partnership do not guarantee that a project will continue under the same deal. Publishers now look closely at development costs, sales goals, deadlines, and whether a game will bring long-term value to their platform.
PHYSINT remains one of the most interesting upcoming games from Kojima Productions. Fans will now be waiting for Xbox and Kojima Productions to reveal gameplay, story details, release platforms, and a possible launch window.
