Dokimon Quest, the retro monster-catching RPG from Yanako RPGs, was briefly free to keep on Steam. The giveaway has now ended, but more than 1 million players reportedly claimed the game before the deadline, while a major update and a sequel announcement have given fans plenty to look forward to.
Dokimon Quest is a pixel-art monster-taming RPG that takes inspiration from classic Game Boy Color-era adventures. Players explore the Xelos region, catch and train creatures called Dokimon, battle opponents, and investigate the disappearance of their childhood friend.
The game became free to claim on Steam for 48 hours from August 24 to August 26, 2026. Players who added it to their Steam library during that period received a permanent copy, even though the game has now returned to its normal price.
Dokimon Quest Free Steam Offer Is Over
The Steam promotion was not a free trial or a limited-time play weekend. It was a “free to keep” offer.
That means anyone who claimed Dokimon Quest before the promotion ended can download and play it whenever they want. Players did not need to install the game during the giveaway; adding it to their Steam account was enough to keep it permanently.
Yanako RPGs used the event both as a thank-you to the game’s community and as a way to introduce more players to the newly announced sequel. The developer said the campaign was tied to the next game’s reveal.
More than 1 million players reportedly claimed Dokimon Quest during the giveaway, giving the small monster-catching RPG a major boost in attention.
What Is Dokimon Quest?
Dokimon Quest is a turn-based RPG with a nostalgic pixel-art style inspired by the Game Boy Color era. It is not a Pokémon game, but it follows familiar monster-taming ideas: exploring new locations, catching creatures, training a team, and using them in battles.
The Steam version launched on November 22, 2024. It includes more than 140 Dokimon to capture and train, along with over 15 towns to explore in the Xelos region.
The story begins when the player learns that their childhood friend has gone missing. From there, the adventure sends players across the region, where they meet new characters, discover dangerous Dokimon, and uncover the mystery behind the disappearance.
Dokimon Quest Features
- A Game Boy Color-inspired pixel-art world.
- Turn-based creature battles.
- More than 140 original Dokimon to find and train.
- More than 15 towns and locations to visit.
- A story centered on a missing childhood friend.
- A retro RPG format designed for fans of classic monster-catching games.
New Trading and Battle Update
The free Steam offer arrived alongside an important Dokimon Quest update for PC players. The update added creature trading and player battles, two features that make it easier for friends to share their teams and compete.
After reaching Xelos City, players can access the new Trading Center and Battle Center. Both facilities are located in the same building.
The systems are offline and use shareable codes instead of live online matchmaking. This is important because players do not simply enter a public lobby and battle random people online.
How Dokimon Trading Works
Players can create a trade code and share it with a friend. The friend can then use that code to receive the selected Dokimon through the trading system.
This gives players a way to exchange creatures with friends, build different teams, or help another player collect Dokimon they may have missed.
How Player Battles Work
The Battle Center lets players prepare a team and create a battle code. A friend can enter that code to load the team and take part in a battle.
It is a different approach from real-time PvP matchmaking, but it still allows players to test their strongest Dokimon teams against friends.
At the moment, the trading and battle additions are focused on PC. These features are not planned for console editions.
Dokimon Quest 2 Takes Players to Edo Japan
Yanako RPGs has also announced Dokimon Quest: II, a direct sequel to the original game. The new title is planned for PC through Steam, with a 2027 release window reported in announcement coverage.
Dokimon Quest: II will send players between the modern world and Edo-period Japan. The main goal is to save Maiko, continuing a story connected to the first game.
The Edo-era setting should help the sequel feel different from a standard monster-catching adventure. Instead of relying only on shops and money, players may need to gather materials, craft items, trade, barter, and complete tasks for people they meet during the journey.
What We Know About Dokimon Quest: II
| Feature | Details |
|---|---|
| Developer | Yanako RPGs |
| Platform | PC via Steam |
| Story | A direct sequel to Dokimon Quest |
| Setting | Modern world and Edo-period Japan |
| Main objective | Save Maiko |
| Release timing | 2027 reported; Steam currently lists it as “Coming soon” |
| Gameplay focus | Monster collecting, exploration, battles, gathering, crafting, and trading |
The sequel’s Steam description calls it a Game Boy Color-era monster-taming JRPG. Players will once again capture and train Dokimon, but the historical Japan setting could give the series a fresh identity.
Should You Still Play Dokimon Quest?
Yes—especially if you already claimed it during the Steam giveaway. Dokimon Quest offers a short, retro-style monster-taming experience for players who enjoy pixel RPGs, creature collecting, and old-school handheld game visuals.
The game may not have the massive budget or huge multiplayer systems of Pokémon, but its new trading and battle features show that Yanako RPGs is continuing to support it. The announcement of Dokimon Quest: II also means the original game could be worth playing before the sequel arrives.
Players who missed the free promotion will need to wait for a future Steam sale or another giveaway. There is currently no official announcement that Dokimon Quest will become free again.
