
PS5 emulation has crossed a practical threshold. The open-source KytyPS5 project can now boot and render several commercial 3D PlayStation 5 games on PC at interactive frame rates, complete with working controller and keyboard input in-game. It is still early and full of bugs, yet the pace of progress over the last few months has been unusually fast and hard to ignore.
Current Capabilities of KytyPS5
KytyPS5 has moved past the stage where it only showed splash screens or simple 2D content. Several full 3D commercial titles now reach playable or near-playable states.
XIII, the 2020 remake, reaches in-game states at roughly 20–30 frames per second. Minor graphical problems remain, but the game is already past the point of mere curiosity. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Wrath of the Mutants also goes in-game and is considered playable around 22–24 FPS. It can crash on the first launch, yet it stabilizes after a restart and lets players move through actual gameplay.
Heavier titles have not reached the same level of playability but still mark clear progress. The PS5 version of Grand Theft Auto V boots to the main menus, settings screens, and loading screens. It is not yet end-to-end playable, but simply reaching those points on a consumer PC is a notable step. Quake II Remastered and PAC-MAN WORLD have also shown in-game rendering in recent builds, proving the emulator can handle more than one engine style.
Controller and keyboard input work inside the tested 3D scenes, which removes one of the biggest early barriers for anyone trying to explore these games. KytyPS5 can currently boot titles built on Unreal Engine 4 and 5, Unity, and various custom engines without needing low-level modules. That breadth of engine support is one reason the list of working games has grown so quickly.
The graphics side runs on Vulkan. On Windows the emulator needs a GPU with Vulkan 1.3 support. Linux support is planned, which should open the project to a wider set of machines once it arrives.
Limitations You Should Expect Right Now
Visual fidelity is still rough. Heavy graphical glitches, missing textures, broken skyboxes and floors, and odd lighting appear regularly. These issues do not stop every game from running, but they make the experience feel unfinished.
Stability remains a daily challenge. Crashes, shader-compilation stalls, and sudden performance drops in complex scenes still happen often. Compatibility is limited to a small subset of titles. Many games will not start at all or will stop at menus and never reach playable sections.
Anyone who wants to try KytyPS5 must supply their own legally dumped PS5 game files and system data. The emulator itself does not include any games or firmware.
Why This Progress Matters for PS5 Emulation
A few months ago many of these same titles would not boot at all. Now multiple 3D commercial games are rendering with usable input and frame rates that approach playable levels. That jump in a short window shows how quickly the underlying work on GPU command processing, shader recompilation, and Vulkan rendering is advancing.
KytyPS5 is developed under the GPL-2.0 license and openly accepts community contributions. The open model has helped speed up iteration. Developers and testers can share code, logs, and fixes without waiting for closed internal builds. The project sits inside a broader surge of PS5 emulator activity that also includes efforts such as SharpEmu. Even so, KytyPS5 currently stands out because it has pushed several real 3D commercial games into interactive states on ordinary PCs rather than high-end research machines.

Community clips, crash logs, and performance notes continue to appear on the PS5 emulation Discord and across various tech channels. Those shared results give a clearer day-to-day picture of which games improve and which still hit hard walls.

The work is early, the bugs are real, and compatibility remains narrow.
